Like chemical foaming masterbatch, raw silica gel enters extruder through particle funnel.
The extruder itself does not require any modifications. One advantage of using physical extrusion method to produce silica gel tube is that dry ice as a physical foaming agent, there will be no residue, so there will be no water generation in the reaction process. Therefore, it is also suitable for hydrolysis of sensitive materials. The new metering technology allows dry ice particles to be fed directly into the feed zone of the extruder using a metering screw and a gravity mixer. Although the sublimation loss of foaming agents is relatively high, the process can be competitive with chemical foaming agents due to the lower cost of CO2. The process allows cheap entry into foam extrusion because any modifications are limited to metering techniques.
